How Many Stephen Colberts Are There?

“It’s bizarre,” remarked an admiring Jon Stewart, whose own program, “The Daily Show,” immediately precedes “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central and is where the Colbert character got his start. “Here is this fictional character who is now suddenly interacting in the real world. It’s so far up its own rear end,” he said, or words to that effect, “that you don’t know what to do except get high and sit in a room with a black light and a poster.”

Best of 2011: Boca-Legende Martin Palermo beendet seine Karriere

F.D.A. Finds Short Supply of Attention Deficit Drugs

Medicines to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are in such short supply that hundreds of patients complain daily to the Food and Drug Administration that they are unable to find a pharmacy with enough pills to fill their prescriptions. ... Caught in between are millions of children and adults who rely on the pills to help them stay focused and calm. Shortages, particularly of cheaper generics, have become so endemic that some patients say they worry almost constantly about availability.

Epicly Later’d: Menace – Pt. 5 – Fabian Alomar

The final part of the Menace series focuses on Fabian Alomar. Fabian's story is so different than most skaters' lives that it almost seems unreal. This episode goes way beyond tricks or styles, or even skating for that matter, and delves into Fabian's upbringing and the lifestyle choices that lead to him spending eight years behind bars. Thank you again to Fabian and his family for letting us tell his story.

Movie executives see record profits, salaries despite piracy fear-mongering

Movie industry lobbyists like to say that online piracy costs their clients billions of dollars every year, and it’s getting worse — but that’s doesn’t quite seem to be the case, according to data released this week by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service (CRS). The CRS report (embedded below) shows that the movie industry is doing very well, earning record profits and paying executives more than ever, even as it hires fewer workers than it did just a decade ago. Although a recent National Crime Prevention Council ad campaign tries to make the point that piracy kills jobs, the CRS found that total gross revenues and box office receipts have doubled in the last 15 years. Grosses went from $52.8 billion in 1995 to $104.4 billion in 2009, while box office receipts went from $5.3 billion in 1995 to $10.6 billion in 2010 — yet hiring still went down.

Japan scientists hope slime holds intelligence key

“Ultimately, I’m interested in creating a bio-computer by using actual slime molds, whose information-processing system will be quite close to that of the human brain,” Aono said. “Slime molds do not have a central nervous system, but they can act as if they have intelligence by using the dynamism of their fluxion, which is quite amazing,” Aono said. “To me, slime molds are the window on a small universe.”

David Diamante – Nets Announcer Shows Flair and Hair

Diamante said he stopped cutting his hair in 1988, when he was a senior in high school. “There was a change in my life, and it felt right, and I just stopped cutting it,” he said, the dreadlocks swept behind him as he smoked. (He ties them up for announcing events.) “Will I cut it tomorrow? Maybe. Will I cut it later today? Maybe. Probably not. I try to go day by day and not to future-trip too much. It’s not that I don’t look to the future, but I really like to live in the moment and be present in the moment.”

The 30 Most Influential Skaters Of All Time

The most influential skater in the history of skateboarding hands down is Mark Gonzales. If you disagree with that then you’re wrong. You can pinpoint Mark back to everything, and know that Mark did it first. A, he did it first; and B, he did it like Mark, which is a really psychotic combo. He did it the best. Everything after was not the same. Everything was so all over the place. Look at Mark’s feet on his frontside ollies—nobody’s got that. It’s like his heels are one the board. It’s just the fucking greatest thing ever. -Jason Dill

Megaupload Video Reinstated, Universal Says “You Can’t Touch Us”

A week ago today, Megaupload’s now-famous Mega Song was on its way to becoming a viral hit, only to be cut down from YouTube by a Universal Music takedown demand. Following the filing of a Megaupload lawsuit the song is back online, but Universal are standing firm. You can’t touch us on DMCA grounds, the label says in a new filing, adding it can take down any material, even if it doesn’t infringe their rights.

Interview with Jason Dill

I only make something when I feel like it's right, or if I have the right materials. I don't use the internet, I find everything I put out by hand, and sometimes I don't find enough material, or I make stuff and then I just don't like it. Also, Fucking Awesome isn't seasonal, it's just there when it's there, and I don't make much of it. I constantly shoot myself in the foot from a business standpoint actually 'cause I make it for sale but at the same time I don't want you to have it. It's a bit of a personality disorder company.

12oz Feature Interview: Earsnot

Earsnot is a writer who’s appetite for vandalism is only matched by his aptitude for the city around him. As President of the infamous IRAK crew, Earsnot (born Kunle Martins) lead more than 20 of NYC’s most prolific writers through an all city graffiti onslaught beginning in the late 1990’s. Stealing what they needed to get by and leaving their mark wherever they went; Earsnot and IRAK would serve as the disciples of downtown. The city was their playground: from building rooftops, to subway tunnels, to nearly every street sign / trash can / or doorway in between; there was no square foot of the entire city that wasn’t a potential target for Kunle and his crew. Earsnot is now recognized as one of the most prominent writers in NYC graffiti history, and with 10+ year old tags still blanketing each of the 5 Boroughs; it’s easy to see why.

Watch ‘The Karate Kid’ Comprised Completely Out Of Rehearsal Footage

In 1983, director John G. Avildsen was getting ready to shoot The Karate Kid with stars Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita and others. As part of the rehearsal process, Avildsen decided to film all of the rehearsals and edited it together into a (very) rough version of the movie. It was used as a tool for the actors to give them a sense of what the movie would be like, how their characters would change, all of that important stuff. Presumably, it was never meant to see the light of day outside of the cast and crew.

Propagandastan

Why is the Pentagon spending tens of millions of US tax dollars to whitewash the image of Central Asian dictatorships? Over the past three years, a subdivision of Virginia-based General Dynamics has set up and run a network of eight "influence websites" funded by the Defense Department with more than $120 million in taxpayer money. The sites, collectively known as the Trans Regional Web Initiative (TRWI) and operated by General Dynamics Information Technology, focus on geographic areas under the purview of various U.S. combatant commands, including U.S. Central Command. In its coverage of Uzbekistan, a repressive dictatorship increasingly important to U.S. military goals in Afghanistan, a TRWI website called Central Asia Online has shown a disturbing tendency to downplay the autocracy's rights abuses and uncritically promote its claims of terrorist threats.
