In an Army-backed experiment called "Power Dreaming,” Naval Hospital Bremerton, in Washington State will help traumatized troops battle their nightmares — with soothing, digitally-made dreams crafted in virtual worlds. No, this is not the script for the sequel to Inception. So the researchers will ask troops to take control of the “creation of the customized healing imagery (therapeutic dreams) to counter the impact of nightmares,” according to a military contracting document. “The model is to develop imagery that is both customized by the [soldier] and neurologically ‘distracting’ to stimulate the development of a clinical relaxation response,” contract documents say.
According to industry executives, the market for "silver porn" has doubled over the last decade and now comprises about a fifth of the 3,000 adult films, worth 100 billion yen (£825m), that Japan produces every year. But, according to film producer Gaichi Kono, the industry is struggling to survive the switch from DVD format to online distribution. ... Tokuda usually appears with much younger women – the youngest was 54 years his junior – in films with such titles as Forbidden Elderly Care.
Has there ever been such a preposterous proposition as Hollywood's forthcoming live action remake of Akira, the seminal 1988 Japanese anime by writer-director Katsuhiro Otomo, which was greenlit earlyer this week. It's the kind of ridiculously unlikely project one might expect to see in the late, lamented HBO comedy Entourage, perhaps featuring blue-eyed Hollywood A-lister Vincent Chase in the lead. Except nobody's laughing about the real-life remake, because most of the proposed casting choices have been just as outlandish.

In Dubai, traffic accidents fell 20 per cent from average rates on the days BlackBerry users were unable to use its messaging service. In Abu Dhabi, the number of accidents this week fell 40 per cent and there were no fatal accidents.
The British and other ambivalent drinking cultures believe that alcohol is a disinhibitor, and specifically that it makes people amorous or aggressive, so when in these experiments we are given what we think are alcoholic drinks - but are in fact non-alcoholic "placebos" - we shed our inhibitions.

An enterprising gang of porn producers kidnapped a Saddam Hussein lookalike last week, with the hopes of forcing him to perform in a sex tape that they planned to sell as “found footage.” Mohamed Bishr told Ahram Online that three men in black suits forced him into a van while he was on his way to a cafe in Alexandria, Egypt last Sunday. Bishr had earlier refused an offer from an unidentified group that offered him $333,000 to appear as Hussein in a sex tape, according to his son, Mahmoud.
Lil Wayne gets deep and personal talking about Steve Jobs’ death, why he drank syrup, why he tattooed his whole body, why he bought a Bugatti, why he learned how to play a guitar and put out a rock album, and why he learned how to skateboard. Tune also shows us a little bit of his mansion, starts to skateboard on his roof, and tells us about how he was considered a “Chief Blood” in Rikers Island.

The first Flip video took more than three years to produce. The first trick filmed that made it into Sorry was Geoff Rowley's lipslide down the double-kink in Laguna, in 1997. The last trick filmed, just days before the May 21, 2002 premiere, was Tom Penny's line at the Belmont ledges in Long Beach. It is also known for the Boulala 25 steps ollie attempt that was tried on two occasions. On the first attempt he landed the trick, but his board exploded on impact. The second attempt was on the last day of filming. Sorry's main cameraman, Fred Mortagne, was leaving for the United States the following day to edit the video. On the way there it started to drizzle. To make matters worse, Ali still had to set up a board. Feeling rushed by the weather, Ali went for it without even warming up. He landed on his board, but couldn't stay on. He went to try it again, but the run-up was getting wet and his foot slipped while pushing full-speed. He lost his balance at the point of no return, so he had to go for it anyway. He kicked his board away mid-ollie, hoping he would clear the steps. He landed feet-first on the flat, severely bruising both heels and was injured for two months. The whole session lasted no more than five minutes.
Doctors are planning the first clinical trial of ecstasy in the UK, to see whether the drug can be beneficial to the traumatised survivors of child abuse, rape and war. Ecstasy and other illegal drugs such as LSD and magic mushrooms are potentially useful in treating people with serious psychological disturbance who cannot begin to face up to their distress, some psychiatrists and therapists believe. But because of public fear and tabloid anger about illegal drugs, scientists say they find it almost impossible to explore their potential.
American Juggalo is a look at the often mocked and misunderstood subculture of Juggalos, hardcore Insane Clown Posse fans who meet once a year for four days at The Gathering of the Juggalos. We went to The Gathering of the Juggalos and let the Juggalos speak their minds.
Giant weapon makers are not the only ones cashing in on US wars. Unbeknownst to the public, the companies behind some the most familiar household name brands constitute the backbone of what has mushroomed into a military-corporate complex of "civilian" firms, which rake in huge profits while helping the Pentagon to carry out its wars and foreign occupations. Unsurprisingly, at least five of these companies have seen their contracts with the Defense Department skyrocket since 9/11.
The Samuel Goldwyn Films movie, which is due out in theaters in Los Angeles and New York on Aug. 5, stars British actress Rachel Weisz as a U.N. policewoman who stumbles into the sordid world of Balkan sex trafficking and finds her fellow U.N. peacekeepers implicated in the trade. It constitutes perhaps the darkest cinematic portrayal of a U.N. operation ever on the big screen, finding particular fault with top U.N. brass, the U.S. State Department, and a major U.S. contractor that supplies American policemen for U.N. missions. The actual abuses in Bosnia were so shocking that the film's director, Larysa Kondracki, told Turtle Bay that she had to tone it down to make it believable and to ensure that viewers didn't "tune it out."
Marijuana arrests now comprise more than one-half (52 percent) of all drug arrests in the United States. Police made 853,838 arrests in 2010 for marijuana-related offenses, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’ annual Uniform crime report, released today. The arrest total is among the highest ever reported by the agency and is nearly identical to the total number of cannabis-related arrests reported in 2009.
