Archive of American Television – Vince Gilligan Interview

Writer/Producer Vince Gilligan was interviewed for nearly four hours in Burbank, CA. He talked about knowing that he wanted to be involved with storytelling, in film or television, from a very early age. He discussed his education at NYU Film school and winning a screenwriting award which lead to his first jobs in television writing. He discussed becoming a staff writer on The X-Files after a chance meeting with series’ creator Chris Carter. He spoke in great detail about his seven years as a writer, and later producer, on X-Files and described several specific episodes including the Emmy-winning "Memento Mori". He spoke about the short-lived spinoff, The Lone Gunmen, and how both series were affected by the events of 9/11. He spoke at length about his current project (then concluding season 4), the AMC drama Breaking Bad, which he created and produced. The interview was conducted by Jenni Matz on August 9, 2011.

Flipside Video Fanzine #1

California's FLIPSIDE fanzine is one of those rare publications that not only reports on and follows a cultural phenomenon, but actually helped in its creation. FLIPSIDE is a chronicler of and commentator on the punk music and lifestyle, as well as a video and record producer and distributor. Some of the most sought after of Flipside releases are the Flipside Video Fanzine series released in the early 1980s which were collections of performances (interview, live, rehearsal, etc.) of punk bands such as Social Distortion, Vandals, Sin 34, Black Flag, RF7, MDC, Descendents, DI, TSOL, Circle Jerks, Husker Du and Youth Brigade.

Interview: David Karp, founder of Tumblr, on realising his dream

David Karp, the founder of the blogging platform Tumblr, was 17 when he decided to cut the apron strings and move to Tokyo. With a smattering of Japanese and a sharp eye for computer code, the impatient Manhattan teenager embarked on a period of self-discovery. "I was holed up in the middle of this world where it was just me on the internet," Karp recalls. Within weeks, he had fine-tuned his computer skills and cooled on the idea of building robots. He wanted to be an entrepreneur. But there was one small problem: his voice. "I was so silly – I tried to be very formal and put on a deep voice to clients over the phone so I didn't have to meet them and give away how young I was," he says. "I lied about my age. I lied about the size of my team. I lied about my experience. I was so terribly embarassed about it for so long. I should have just owned up."

Interview with Jason Dill

I only make something when I feel like it's right, or if I have the right materials. I don't use the internet, I find everything I put out by hand, and sometimes I don't find enough material, or I make stuff and then I just don't like it. Also, Fucking Awesome isn't seasonal, it's just there when it's there, and I don't make much of it. I constantly shoot myself in the foot from a business standpoint actually 'cause I make it for sale but at the same time I don't want you to have it. It's a bit of a personality disorder company.

12oz Feature Interview: Earsnot

Earsnot is a writer who’s appetite for vandalism is only matched by his aptitude for the city around him. As President of the infamous IRAK crew, Earsnot (born Kunle Martins) lead more than 20 of NYC’s most prolific writers through an all city graffiti onslaught beginning in the late 1990’s. Stealing what they needed to get by and leaving their mark wherever they went; Earsnot and IRAK would serve as the disciples of downtown. The city was their playground: from building rooftops, to subway tunnels, to nearly every street sign / trash can / or doorway in between; there was no square foot of the entire city that wasn’t a potential target for Kunle and his crew. Earsnot is now recognized as one of the most prominent writers in NYC graffiti history, and with 10+ year old tags still blanketing each of the 5 Boroughs; it’s easy to see why.

Odd Future: The New Underground’s Loud Family Goes on the Road

A couple of times during the trip, when the tour bus is too hotboxed or somebody's boxers are on the floor, Tyler jokes about going solo. But when he accepted his MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist this year, his mom crying and screaming at his side, he delivered his largely bleeped-out speech with the group hopping around and hugging behind him. "I would never, never leave these dudes," he says. "Without them trusting my lead and having my back no matter what the fuck happened, I wouldn't be here. Because I come up with some crazy shit, and nobody trusted me, but these motherfuckers was like, 'You know what? Fuck it, eat a roach.'"

Ohne Firlefanz, ohne Unterbrechung. Es gibt keine Fanfaren zwischendurch, keine Werbespots. Nichts, was die Atmosphäre stört, was einen vom Spiel ablenkt."

David Choe – Interview (Boston, MA – 11/27/07)

This interview is special on so many levels to us here @ UGHH, because we're huge fans of David Choe's work, but also, because somehow Van$tylez was able to crack the exterior of David Choe's skull and sip the juice from the inner recesses of his psyche. If I had any sort of psychiatric background, I would be able to give you something better for this description.. but instead I'll just suggest that you watch for yourself.
